If you’ll marry at a cruise ship’s port of call, you will need to arrange for transportation from the dock to the spot where your wedding will take place and back again. Make sure you arrange these rides in plenty of time to reach your wedding spot, and return to the ship in time for departure.

Think also about vehicles available for anyone in your group to drive. If you’d like to approach your beach wedding via moped or Jeep—rented for the day—you’ll have to make sure your chosen drivers know the rules of the road (such as how to drive on the left-hand side of the road) and are able to rent cars or vehicles in the first place. Some locations might not rent to anyone under twenty-one, which would cause you to have to switch up your plans for a driver.

Ask if you can decorate your mode of transportation. Some companies will allow you to attach signage, such as to the back of a limo or horse and sleigh, or horse and carriage, and some will not. When a vehicle is speeding along, some signs can bounce around in the wind and chip the paint of the vehicle. So before you buy and bring car signs, make sure you have permission first. Also, ask if the vehicle will be decorated. Some horse and carriage companies festoon their carriages with flowers, and I’ve seen some festooned with very cheesy fake flowers, so ask about this important detail. You can ask for a non-floral carriage.

With horse-related transportation—whether carriage, sleigh, or on horseback—it’s important to ask the company about their rules for the horses’ safety. Some companies won’t let their horses ride on highways, or in extremely hot or extremely cold weather. Find out about their rules and their cancellation policies and refunds as well, and have a Plan B in mind in case the horses can’t be used for your wedding.
